“We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members, one of another.” (Romans 12:5)??
Catholic Education Week celebrated annually by Hamilton Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) schools ran from April 30 – May 5, 2023.
Sacred Heart of Jesus school is a hidden treasure. We have wonderful students and a beautiful caring school community. At Sacred Heart of Jesus school our Principal, Mr. Mielko, inspires us with his personal motto of “leading with your heart”, which he exemplifies daily. He is there for everyone, setting high standards and guiding us to fulfilling the mission of our catholic school.
On Monday May 1, 2023 our Gr. 7 & 8 student Council?began with our opening liturgy. Each class created a poster with the theme of “We are Many, We are One” which decorated our place of worship. they presented. Each class was encouraged to take a photo with their posters. Following the liturgy each class was presented with a big round piece of wood known as a doweling. The wood was cut and shaped by grade 8 teacher Mr. Seichter. Names of students are to be engraved on the doweling and then placed in the school garden.
On Tuesday May 2, 2023, students were invited to Hamilton public library Concession branch where they made buttons with the heart of Jesus as keepsakes. Thanks to Jeff Comer, Cyndi Di Leonardo and staff for their continued support.
On Wednesday May 3, 2023, Rev Fr. Greg M from St. Margaret Mary came to the school to bless the students and staff and to engage in a conversation about what it means to be a follower of Jesus. He was presented with a cheque of $220.95 as a donation for the support of students in Haiti. The money was raised by students as part of Lenten Almsgiving. Sacred Heart of Jesus students were able to send 3 students in Haiti for a full year of school.

At 12:30p.m.?School Wide DownieWenjack Walk, “Staff and students at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Elementary School have committed to improving the lives of Indigenous people by building awareness, education and connections between all people in Canada. These efforts have recognized Sacred Heart as a Legacy School through the Downie and Wenjack Fund.”
On Friday May 5, 2023 we celebrated the closing of Catholic Education week with a closing Ceremony led by the Student Council, before the closing prayer. One student from each class will carry their signed doweling (big round wood piece)?to place it in our backyard where our 2 trees are planted.?What a lovely way to end our week of celebration. A week to remember for a long time. The school that prays together stays together.
At Sacred Heart of Jesus school, we truly are practicing our?Board’s mantra of “Believing, Achieving, Serving.”?
As the Catholic Bishops of Ontario highlighted in Renewing the Promise, “It is about taking the time to walk alongside one another, to listen and to teach, and in doing so, to transform.”
