Working together to prevent suicide

Thursday, September 10, 2020 is World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) and this year’s theme, “Working Together to Prevent Suicide,” highlights the importance of communities everywhere coming together to recognize the impact of suicide and to put the necessary structures in place to prevent it. At times the work of suicide prevention can feel overwhelming but even small acts can make a difference.

Suicide occurs across all age groups, including children and youth. It is a myth that talking about suicide will put the idea in someone’s mind. WSPD is an opportunity to remind students that there is always hope, and there are people ready and wanting to help. School Mental Health Ontario (SMHO) created a Suicide Prevention Guide for Parents and Families during COVID-19 and Return to School. This guide is designed to help answer some frequently asked questions so that parents and families can prepare, prevent, and respond if your child or teen is experiencing thoughts of suicide.

Just like with physical health, we all go through times when we do not feel as mentally well. Students are encouraged to speak to a teacher, principal, parent or a trusted adult such as a relative, coach, faith leader, Elder or family doctor if they concerned about their mental health. A helpful resource to support students in reaching out for help can be found here.

Students can also call Kids Help Phone and speak to a trained counsellor. Kids Help Phone Counsellors are available 24/7 at 1-800-668-6868 or by texting CONNECT to 686868. Help is also available from safeTALK and ASIST trained staff at their school.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” ~ Jeremiah 29:11
