In recognition of the importance of treaties in the shaping of our province, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is joining millions of Ontarians across the province in celebrating Treaties Recognition Week, November 5-11, 2017.
The Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation (MIRR) has designated the first week of November as Treaties Recognition Week to promote public education and awareness about treaties and treaty relationships.
All students, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, are enriched by learning about the histories, cultures, contributions and perspectives of First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples in Canada. To support this learning, the Ministry of Education has created a number of curriculum-linked resources to encourage dialogue and discussion in Ontario’s classrooms. One such resource, The First Nations and Treaties Map of Ontario: Information for Educators, is available in pdf format at ontario.ca/treaties.
Additional resources are also available on MIRR’s website at http://www.ontario.ca/indigenous
Schools are invited to hashtag photos of their TRW activities using #TreatyONT
Treaties Recognition Week is one of many steps on Ontario’s journey of healing and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
